PLAYAS - A PLACE TO DISCOVER IN BAJA
Many first time travelers crossing the border to enter Mexico usually walk into the country rather than drive. Your impression after leaving that day is that Mexico is poor, has many beggars and is primarily just a place to buy arts and crafts cheaply by dickering with the local merchants. Next time, you should drive in and just venture 10 minutes into Mexico past the San Ysidro border crossing - you will discover an amazingly beautiful country that has some of the most gorgeous coastlines in North America.
At the end of your 10 minute drive you will find a city by the name of Playas. Being the sister city to San Diego, Playas has many of the amenities that you would find in the United States - Starbucks, Blockbuster Video, Carl's Jr., Kentucky Fried Chicken, Dominos Pizza, internet cafes and soon to be opened, a Wal-Mart in nearby Rosarito. In addition to the names you are familiar with, there are also their own well-known stores - Sanborn's, The Yogurt Place (local meeting place restaurants), Comercial Mexicana, Calimax(grocery stores), Titos(well known local seafood restaurant), Banamex, Bancomer, Scotia Bank, HSBC(banks) and the Oasis Hospital (well respected in the area and is also known for treating Amish patients for many years),
Playas is a city where the middle and upper class Mexican people live. The local saying is that if you can afford to live in Playas, you are doing pretty well. Due to the fact that Playas is so close to San Diego, many people are bi-lingual and there are a large numbers of Americans living in Playas commuting across the border to work in the US. Pass through the Northern toll booth for your first glimpse of Playas. The exit ramp view offers you a breathtaking panoramic overview of the City of Playas, the Pacific Ocean and the bull fighting stadium located at the end of the beach.
Why live in Playas? Affordability, location, climate - you can rent a 3 bedroom house here anywhere from $500 to $750 a month. Apartments range from $180 - $400 a month. Taxes on homes can be as low as only $200 a year and home prices starting for as little $200,000. Playas have everything that you need to live. Located only minutes away are restaurants, movie theatres, plays, grocery stores, swap meets, fast food, mechanics and body shops. Usually, no matter where you live in Playas, these places are only a 10 minute car drive away. There are many taxis and local buses. Playas is a complete city. There are many affordable condominiums (such as the new Aqua project located OCEANFRONT starting at $250,000). Imagine owning a luxury condo right on the beach for this price! Many other homes are available that have great ocean views in this community also. Playas is 10 minutes from the border, 10 minutes to downtown Rosarito and 40 minutes from Ensenada. Throw away your snow shovels, boots, tire chains and bring your shorts, sandals and suntan lotion instead. The climate is the same as San Diego.
The lesson? Next time, drive into Mexico and discover a whole different world you never knew existed - but you need to make that 10 minute drive!
